Welcome to WISE!

In the summer of 2019, two women with Information Technology (IT) and business backgrounds decided to start a nonprofit science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) non-profit organization that focuses on helping black and brown women and girls maintain and sustain their interest in STEM beginning in the third grade through high school,  college, and throughout their STEM career by using a holistic approach that includes tutoring, mentoring, technology, and other support services to reduce or eliminate barriers to thrive in STEM.

We selected the name Women Inspiring Girls and Women in STEM Excellence (WISE) because it embodies our mission and core values. We established WISE as a 501 (c) 3 in Loudoun County Virginia because of the opportunity to tap into a plethora of IT  resources, while understanding that barriers for inclusiveness for black and brown girls still exist.

In the spring of 2020, while developing our business plan, the rapid spread of COVID-19 hit the world. It became increasingly important for WISE to help build a free STEM e-Learning platform for black and and brown women and girls.

Black and brown girls and women were already at a disadvantage pre-COVID-19, and the post-impact may not be realized for years to come. Now more than ever, we must help build STEM resilience into our workforce and education systems for black and brown women and girls.

Our mission is to seek to inspire black and brown women and girls to excel in STEM confidently to achieve and maintain success in their academic and professional lives.

Sharon Metz

Mrs. Metz is a Demand Planning Manager with Givaudan Fragrance and Flavors. She reviews historical data trends, research demand drivers, and maintains demand forecasts to support the organization’s supply chain.

She holds a degree in Chemical Engineering and has held positions in Fortune 500 companies and privately held companies since the time of her graduation. She has held technical roles such as Process Engineer and held positions in commercial and supply chain. She found that her STEM training has been foundational and a significant contributor to her success in every role that she has held.

In nearly every corporate environment in her career, there was one consistently accurate thing; she was typically one of few women at that level or position. Naturally, she was the only woman of color at that level or status. Her firm belief is that her being the “only one” was not because she is personally exceptional, but because she had a support system from the time she was very young that helped her understand that a STEM career was possible and something she could achieve. As Mrs. Metz pursued a degree in engineering, she continued to have support, and when she started her career in a STEM field, she had mentors that supported her growth as a young professional.

Mrs. Metz is on the Givaudan Bond Hill Academy Adopt A Class board. This mentoring program allows Givaudan employees to serve 4th & 5th-grade students of Bond Hill Academy. Employees spend time mentoring and participating in various activities with these students during the school year. The program is intended to be a community outreach program designed to expose kids in underprivileged neighborhoods to science careers. She has also been a member of the NC A&T Alumni Advisory Board for the Chemical Engineering Department.

Mrs. Metz has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from North Caroling A&T State University and holds a Six Sigma Yellow Belt certification.
