In the summer of 2019, two women with Information Technology (IT) and business backgrounds decided to start a nonprofit science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) non-profit organization that focuses on helping black and brown women and girls maintain and sustain their interest in STEM beginning in the third grade through high school, college, and throughout their STEM career by using a holistic approach that includes tutoring, mentoring, technology, and other support services to reduce or eliminate barriers to thrive in STEM.
We selected the name Women Inspiring Girls and Women in STEM Excellence (WISE) because it embodies our mission and core values. We established WISE as a 501 (c) 3 in Loudoun County Virginia because of the opportunity to tap into a plethora of IT resources, while understanding that barriers for inclusiveness for black and brown girls still exist.
In the spring of 2020, while developing our business plan, the rapid spread of COVID-19 hit the world. It became increasingly important for WISE to help build a free STEM e-Learning platform for black and and brown women and girls.
Black and brown girls and women were already at a disadvantage pre-COVID-19, and the post-impact may not be realized for years to come. Now more than ever, we must help build STEM resilience into our workforce and education systems for black and brown women and girls.
Our mission is to seek to inspire black and brown women and girls to excel in STEM confidently to achieve and maintain success in their academic and professional lives.
