Who we are

This is the Privacy Policy for the WOMEN AND GIRLS INSPIRING STEM EXCELLENCE (WISE), is a registered in Virginia as a non-stock corporation and designated as a 501 (c) with the IRS. We can be reached by email at info@wise-stem.org.

WISE values individual privacy and we want to give our website visitors the opportunity to know what information we collect about them and how they can limit the use of personally identifiable information beyond the purposes for which they first provided it.  At all times, however, WISE reserves the right to disclose information where required by law or to comply with valid legal process, to protect WISE’s rights or property or during emergencies when safety is at risk.

Whenever we change our policy, we will post a notice on our home page.  Since these policy change notices last only for a limited time, however, you should check this Privacy Policy regularly to see if there have been any changes. 

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Information Sharing

WISE may share statistical or demographic information in aggregate form with third parties for marketing or research purposes, applying for grants, or reporting to a grant-making organization, which enables us to obtain funding to offer our programs.  This aggregate data will not contain any information that personally identifies you.

We may partner with a third party in order to obtain access to specialized services or to offer specific programs.  When we do so and you sign up for these services or programs, we will share such personal information as is necessary for the delivery of the services or success of the program.  Any recipient of such information is required to restrict use solely to furtherance of the purposes for which the services are intended. However, third parties may store, collect or otherwise have access to your information when you interact with their tracing technologies. We are not responsible for the privacy policies and practices of such third parties and, therefore, you should review such third-party privacy policies and practices prior to interacting with them.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

How You Can Control and Update Data about You

We want to be sure that we keep only the most accurate and up-to-date information about you in our records.  Therefore, whenever you believe that your contact information needs to be updated, you can email us at info@wise-stem.org  to correct or update your contact information.

You may choose at any time to remove your name, telephone and fax numbers, and postal and email addresses from the lists we use to send notices or updates and elect not to receive correspondence from us by emailing at info@wise-stem.org.

Users may request that WISE refrain from disclosing to third parties the data it collects by contacting WISE at info@wise-stem.org.

Personally Identifiable Information

We collect your email address if you communicate with us by email, as well as other information that you might supply voluntarily, such as survey information or contact information you provide when making a donation or registering for our events or programs (including names, addresses, phone, fax and email addresses).

We may use this information to respond to an email or other inquiry or request, to help improve our website and our services, to successfully deliver our events or programs, or to send updates or notices about our organization and the programs we offer that we think may be of interest to you.

Information Collected by Third Party Websites and Applications

We use new technologies and social media options to communicate and interact with you and the public. We maintain accounts on third party websites, such as Eventbrite, Constant Contact, and social media sites, as tools to better interact with the public.  Your activity on those third-party websites is governed by the security and policies of those sites.

WISE’s privacy policy extends to our website only. Other Internet sites you visit – including those linked from our website – may have their own privacy policies or no policy at all. We strongly encourage you to review the privacy policies of any site before providing any personal information to ensure that you understand how your information may be used.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

Data Integrity and Security

We have reasonable security measures in place on our web server to keep any information you provide to protect against the loss, misuse or alteration of information. However, no data transmission over the Internet, mobile networks, wireless transmission or electronic storage of information can be guaranteed to be 100% secure. Please note that we cannot ensure the security of any information that you transmit to us. You use our Site and provide us with your information at your own risk.

Children’s Privacy

We recognize the need to provide further privacy protections for children. Some of our programs and services are directed to children. For those programs, we will collect, use and disclose information as described in this Privacy Policy except as outlined below.

To the extent that we collect personally identifiable data with respect to a person under the age of 18, we will request that that information be submitted by a parent or guardian, or request permission from that parent or guardian prior to collection. If the child is under the age of 13, we will only collect information directly from the parent or guardian.

Personal data may be retained as needed to plan and operate our programs, or to notify participants of future opportunities or programs that may be of interest to them.  Personal information may be shared outside of WISE with a contractor providing services that are integral to the program, as required by law, in the event of an emergency or, when applicable, with prior consent from their parent or guardian.

At any time, a parent or guardian can refuse to permit us to collect personal information from their child and can request that we delete from our records the personal information we have in our possession.  If you have any questions or concerns about our approach to children’s privacy, you want to access your child’s data, or request the deletion of your child’s data, please contact us at info@wise-stem.org.
